IRS rules built into this calculator
- 2026 RMD = December 31, 2025 account balance ÷ the applicable IRS distribution period.
- Table III (Uniform Lifetime) is used for most original account owners.
- If a spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger, Table II applies.
- Roth IRA owners and owners of designated Roth accounts generally do not take lifetime RMDs.
- Traditional, SEP and SIMPLE IRA owners generally cannot delay RMDs because they are still working.
- Certain employer-plan participants may be able to delay RMDs until retirement if the plan allows and they are not 5% owners.
- Inherited-account RMDs use separate beneficiary rules and are not automatically calculated here.
